The Second XI have stormed into the 2016/17 Grand Final with a comprehensive 83-run preliminary final victory over Prahran.
Once again, the Bombers were well-served by a dynamic top order with James Dickinson (67), Nishal Perera (45) and James Ryan (44) grinding out the best of Prahran’s bowling before taking control of the match in front of a rapturous home crowd at Windy Hill. The tail didn’t let that ascendancy slip either with Isaac Conway (28) and Liam Molloy (24) both exceeding themselves at a crucial venture to push Essendon’s total out to 272.
Having set Prahran a difficult run chase compounded by the pressure of a preliminary final, Essendon steadily got on top with Perera delivering a match-winning spell. After a home and away season that saw him take just 14 wickets, Perera was in unbeatable touch against Prahran as he took 5/40. The Bombers were home long before Liam Molloy took his first and his side’s tenth wicket to put them through to the Grand Final against Frankston Peninsula.
